Marty Blake has been working as a freelance illustrator and graphic designer for many years. Her published work includes editorial, book jackets, packaging, posters, etc. Marty’s picture-making is grounded in collage, usually digital for illustration assignments and cut paper for personal work. Her pictures are composed of scraps from her extensive library of old books, magazines, ephemera, cabinet cards, and vintage cigar box labels—with an occasional bit of lichen or doll’s arm tacked on. Marty teaches Illustration classes at Syracuse University, among other teaching and lecturing gigs. She’s currently serving a second term as Education Chair on the Board of ICON, the Illustration Conference. ICON11 will take place in Kansas City, MO, June 28–July 1, 2020. The cabinet card collages have been an ongoing series of series of personal work: Odd Ditty, Too Odd Ditty (Ditty Dumb, Ditty Two), Life, Do Be Do Be Do, The Motley Crew of Motley Fools, Victorian Super Heroines (Les Soeurs Flottant) among others. They occasionally find their way into competitions, assignments, and galleries. They’re sneaky that way.
